Here’s a gift for that car nut who has everything – a hand-built audio dock for his or her iPhone or iPod.
What makes it so special? It is composed of a genuine exhaust manifold made by craftsmen in Modena, Italy, the home of Ferrari.
The iXoost is the brainchild of Matteo Panini and Mirco Pecorari. Why iXoost? That is the Italian pronunciation of the English word ‘exhaust’.
Built with painstaking precision, each iXoost is carved out of a solid block of aluminium. Individual pieces are turned and milled using five-axis machines, before being joined together with an eight, ten or twelve-cylinder exhaust manifold.
Customers can choose the colour, metallic finish, type of leather and even the Allen screws.
It comes with a special app that that makes the iPhone or iPod the perfect partner for the specially developed speakers and active 140-watt subwoofer.
Pecorari, who has designed the liveries of more than 500 aircraft around the world, says the main base with its ‘sound horns’ and the exhaust manifold is used as a sound box for the woofer, sealed off inside a small retro-styled bell, à la café racer.
He says the console is reminiscent of the crankcase of a ‘60s-’70s motorcycle, "complete with contrasting Allen screws and two ports coated in fine leather, designed to give the tactile sensation of the refined interior of a racing berlinetta."
Prices start at € 5.000, ($6,250) For more info go to www.ixoost.it.
