The Scorpion Winter is the newest arrival in Pirelli's Scorpion family of tires. According to the company it is at its best during the colder months of the year, during a cold rain or even a driving snow.
The Scorpion Winter is the tire of choice for AMG, Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo. It was developed in close collaboration with Porsche and Volkswagen, and works with the most recent traction control and ABS systems.
Scorpion Winter will also be available in a run-flat version when introduced to North America this fall.
Pirelli says it "follows the natural evolution of SUVs, which over the years have transformed themselves from functional workhorses into safe and sustainable multi-purpose vehicles."
In addition to improved braking and traction on snow, Pirelli says the new Scorpion Winter reduces braking distances in the wet and dry, offers reduced rolling resistance by 4% for lower fuel consumption, is three decibels quieter and lasts longer.
Development took three years and 300,000 kilometres of testing, on circuits and normal roads in Oceania and Europe, with temperatures ranging from -32 C in Sweden to 8 C in Spain.
Scorpion Winter will be sold in a variety of sizes from 16 to 21 inches and will be available in 21 different sizes.
A second new winter tire, the studdable Carving Edge will follow.
