Ten best-selling cars and trucks in Canada in 2015 - Mazda's critically-acclaimed Mazda3 has a lock on fourth place in passenger-car sales, well back of third-place Corolla and comfortably in front of fifth-place Chevy Cruze.

2016-17 AUDI Q3

System: Lighting, Instrumentation

Number of vehicles affected: 5,449

Details: If the parking brake is used during emergency braking, the brake lights on the vehicle will not activate, which would leave vehicles trailing behind unaware of the emergency braking taking place. This could increase the risk of a rear-end crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will update vehicle software.

2013-14 BMW 5 Series

System: Lighting, Instrumentation

Number of vehicles affected: 544

Details: The rear reflex reflectors fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108. This could reduce the vehicle’s being visible to other road users, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will replace the rear reflectors.

2018 BMW 7 Series

System: Powertrain

Number of vehicles affected: 32

Details: The V-12 may have an incorrectly-installed engine cooler line that could cause an oil leak during engine operation. If the oil cooler line leaks, oil could spill onto the front brake disc or the road surface, which would reduce friction needed to effectively slow the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the engine oil cooler line.

2013-14 BMW 7 Series

System: Lighting, Instrumentation

Number of vehicles affected: 5

Details: A replacement left rear tail lamp may have been installed without a rear reflex reflector, which fails to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108. This could reduce the vehicle’s being visible to other road users, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the left rear tail lamp assembly and replace the unit with one that includes a reflex reflector, if necessary.

2017 Buick Envision

System: Seating; restraint

Number of vehicles affected: 56

Details: An optional Universal Tablet Holder accessory may have been incorrectly installed on front seat head restraints, which may prevent the head restraint posts from fully engaging in the seat back. A head restraint that is not fully engaged in the seat back could loosen and dislodge, or inadvertently move to an undesired height which may provide insufficient head and neck support, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant in a crash, and would fail to comply with the requirements of the standard. Correction: Dealers will inspect the head restraints and tablet holders for correct installation and reinstall if necessary. GM will also mail corrected installation instructions to customers who purchased the Universal Tablet Holder over the counter for installation on their own vehicles.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

System: Powertrain

Number of vehicles affected: 593

Details: Certain Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) may have Power Inverter Module diodes that could fail and result in loss of motive power without warning, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will replace the faulty components.

2011-12 Dodge Grand Caravan

System: Airbag

Number of vehicles affected: 86,544

Details: An electrical short could occur in the steering wheel wiring harness, which could result in the inadvertent deployment of the steering wheel airbag, which could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.

Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the steering wheel wiring, as necessary, and add a protective covering on the wiring harness.

2015-17 Ford Transit

System: Powertrain

Number of vehicles affected: 26,183

Details: The driveline operating angle may cause the flexible coupling between the transmission and driveshaft to crack, which initially would result in vibration and noise from underneath the vehicle and could cause driveshaft separation resulting in a loss of motive power while driving, or unintended vehicle movement while parked. It could also damage surrounding components, including brake and fuel lines, in the event of a separation. All instances could result in property damage and/or injury to vehicle occupants and bystanders.

Correction: On vehicles with more than 48,000 km, dealers will replace the driveshaft flexible coupling every 48,000 km until the availability of a final repair is available, which is the installation of a redesigned flexible coupling, modified driveshaft bracket and shield, or a revised driveshaft equipped with a universal joint.

2018 Honda Odyssey

System: Seating; restraint

Number of vehicles affected: 417

Details: An outer seat belt position seat belt tongue may have been incorrectly installed onto the third-row seating centre seat belt assembly, which would lead to the seatbelt not latching properly, which would increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant in a crash.

Correction: Dealers will inspect the third row centre seat belt for the correct belt tongue and replace as necessary.

2015-16 Hyundai Genesis

System: Braking

Number of vehicles affected: 11,987

Details: On cars with a manually operated parking brake, a corroded electrical switch could lead to the parking brake warning light not coming on to indicate engagement of the manual brake. If the brake is engaged or not disengaged properly, it could lead to drag, brake overheating and resultant smell and/or smoking.

Correction: Dealers will replace the parking brake switch.

2013-17 Hyundai Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport

System: Structure

Number of vehicles affected: 128,865

Details: A corroded cable between the hood latch actuating lever may cause the secondary hood latch to not close properly resulting in the possibility of the hood flying open if the primary latch doesn’t latch properly or comes open. This would seriously compromise the driver’s visibility, potentially resulting in a crash and subsequent injuries and damage.

Correction: Dealers will replace the secondary hood latch cable.

2017-18 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

System: Seating; restraint

Number of vehicles affected: 805

Details: A incorrectly fastened seatbelt anchor could result in the driver’s seatbelt detaching from its inner sill mount and not properly restraining the driver in a crash, resulting in increased risk of injury.

Correction: Dealers will verify the driver’s seat belt anchor is properly fastened and repair as needed.

2010-11 Jaguar XJ

System: Airbag

Number of vehicles affected: 314

Details: A software update error to the Restraint Control Module (RCM) may result in the airbag’s not deploying as intended in a front impact, which could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Correction: Dealers will update the RCM software.

2014-17 Mazda3, 2012-14 Mazda6

System: Braking

Number of vehicles affected: 72,835

Details: On vehicles equipped with hand-operated parking brakes, the rear brake caliper protective boot may be penetrated by moisture, causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode, which over time could lead to decreased parking brake grip or cause the parking brake to drag while driving. The former situation could allow the vehicle to roll away if parked on a slope, which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect. and repair or replace the rear caliper assembly, as necessary.

2004-08 Mazda RX-8

System: Fuel

Number of vehicles affected: 6,788

Details: The fuel pump discharge pipe may crack and cause a fuel leak, which in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire, increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the fuel filter body.

2004 Mazda RX-8

System: Suspension

Number of vehicles affected: 3,004

Details: Due to inappropriate manufacturing, the ball joint socket on the front lower control arm may crack. Under increased load while driving, the ball joint may suddenly separate from the socket, which could result in loss of steering control, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace lower control arm components.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, Sprinter 3500

System: Labelling

Number of vehicles affected: 193

Details: Tire pressure labels may contain incorrect information on front axle tire pressures. Inflating tires to incorrect pressures could lead to tire failure and if this happens at speed, it could result in loss of control over the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash and subsequent injuries and damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the tire pressure label.

2011-12 Porsche Cayenne, 2010-12 Porsche Panamera

System: Powertrain

Number of vehicles affected: 1,823

Details: Camshaft adjuster fastening screws may not have been properly fastened during assembly, potentially causing them to fail and leading to abnormal engine noises and vibrations, illumination of the check engine light, and perhaps cause vehicle to stall, which could lead to a crash if it happens at speed, increasing the risk of injury and property damage.

Correction: Dealers will replace the fastening screws of the camshaft adjusters, as well as the camshaft adjuster assembly, if necessary.

2016 Toyota Tacoma

System: Powertrain

Number of vehicles affected: 2,398

Details: On V-6 engine models, the crankshaft rotor may have been produced with a too-thick anti-corrosion coating, which could cause interference with the crank position sensor and perhaps lead to a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and damage to property.

Correction: Dealers will replace the crank position sensor.

2017 Volvo XC90

System: Seating; restraint

Number of vehicles affected: 101

Details: Crimping of the tube for the Micro Gas Generator (MGG) in the 3rd row passengers side seat belt retractor was not manufactured to specification. In the event of a crash that warrants the activation of the seat belt pretensioner, the MGG squib may detach and be propelled out of the tube.

Hyundai Genesis - Canadians have long appreciated the value proposition of South Korean automaker Hyundai. Ever since the little Pony washed up on our shores in 1983, consumers and the company both grew more sophisticated and Hyundai became a quick study. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the Genesis luxury sedan has garnered considerable sales success. Redesigned for 2015, it’s returned even more refined and groomed to steal sales from more established brands. Hyundai stuck with a tried-and-true formula: a muscular V-8 engine driving the rear wheels – just as other marques appear to be favouring forced-induction six-cylinder drivetrains.

2018 Honda Odyssey - Minivans may have fallen from favour after decades of popularity, but that doesn’t change the fact they are the most useful family conveyance on the market – a point amply reinforced by the introduction of the 2018 Honda Odyssey. While utility vehicles may have become the hot ticket on the sales floor, they can’t hold a candle to minivans when it comes to accommodating people and/or cargo.  By Richard Russell

2013 BMW 7-Series - BMW’s range-topping 7 Series executive sedan is a technological tour de force that offers a mind-bending array of high-tech driving aides to keep this big sedan on the straight and narrow while coddling its driver and passengers. In typical Teutonic fashion, BMW furnished an array of powertrains – the classic 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V-8, and a monster 6.0-litre twin-turbo V-12 that produces 535 hp – to ensure customers can choose the right level of intimidating power befitting the car’s stature.

BMW 7-Series - The BMW 7-Series is all about class, sophistication and comfort – a recipe to impress. Beyond its elongated shape and powerful body lines, a stand-out feature is a taller version of BMW's signature twin-kidney grille. There are plenty of engine options available, including a turbocharged 320-hp inline-six and the sportier turbo 445-hp 4.4-litre V-8. If  that's not enough, there's the M760i variant that gets up to 600 hp from its super-sized V-12 engine.
