Thirty new cars have been nominated as candidates for the 2013 North American Car of the Year NACOTY) award and 15 trucks or utility vehicles for the North American Truck/Utility of the Year (NATOTY).
Japanese brands dominate the list of nominees with a total of 19 vehicles, followed by North American (12), European (10) and Korean (4) nameplates.
Candidates for the 2013 North American Car of the Year include:
Acura ILX, BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, Cadillac ATS, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Spark, Dodge Dart, Ford Fusion, Ford Focus Electric, Honda Accord, Honda Fit EV, Hyundai Azera, Hyundai Elantra GT, Lexus ES, Lexus GS, Lincoln MKZ, Mazda 6, Mercedes-Benz, SL Nissan Altima, Nissan Sentra, Porsche 911, Porsche Boxster, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, SRT Viper, Toyota Avalon, Tesla Model S, Toyota Yaris and Toyota Prius C.
Candidates for the 2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year include:
Acura RDX, Audi Allroad, BMW X1, Hyundai Santa Fe, Infiniti JX 35, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz GL, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru SV Crosstrek and Toyota RAV4 EV.
The jury for the NACOTY/NATOTY awards is comprised of 50 automotive journalists from Canada and the U.S. They will vote on an initial short list of candidates in September. The overall winners will be announced at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January.
The Hyundai Elantra won the 2012 North American Car of the Year award and the 2012 Range Rover Evoque was the 2012 North American Truck of the Year.
