Last month Mazda released details of its all-new Mazda3 hatchback for 2014. Now, we get a first look at the fastback sedan body style that will join it when both arrive in Canadian Mazda stores this fall.
Lower and wider than the current model, the sedan incorporates a cab-rearward design. Its raked profile, rising towards the rear, is highlighted by boldly flared fenders and big alloy wheels at each corner.
The sedan's different roof, rear window, rear quarter and decklid design extend its overall length by 120 mm to 4,580mm – compared to 4,460 mm for the hatchback.
Both also boast improved aerodynamics that are now among the best on the market, with Cd (Coefficient of Drag) values of 0.258 for the sedan and 0.275 for the hatchback.
Despite performance-enhancing changes that normally add weight – such as bigger brakes and bigger wheels – the all-new Mazda3 is lighter than the current model and among the lightest C-segment cars.
The combination of low drag, low weight and efficient SkyActiv engines and transmissions is expected to result in exceptionally low fuel-consumption figures when the official ratings are released.
