Acura is taking what it learned in tuning the new NSX and applying it to the rest of its lineup, starting with the TLX midsized sedan that will be in showrooms in summer 2019.
Combining the top-of-the-line Advance Package features with the character of the A-Spec, the 2020 Acura TLX PMC edition is handcrafted at Acura’s bespoke Performance Manufacturing Centre (PMC) that currently produces the NSX. It will feature the Valencia Red Pearl paint with nano-pigment technology that to this point had been exclusive to NSX.
Next in line for the PMC treatment will be the mid-sized MDX sport-utility, which also debuted at the New York International Auto Show, albeit in prototype form.
“We designed the PMC not only to build NSX, but to give Acura the flexibility to explore handcrafted production of limited-edition models,” said Jon Ikeda, Acura Brand Officer. “The TLX and MDX PMC Edition are the first to take advantage of this unique capability, and we intend to explore additional options."
The PMC treatment begins with the arrival of the TLX body-in-white from the car’s production facility in Marysville, Ohio, for paint application at the PMC. Once that’s done, the PMC technicians assemble the car by hand, starting with the installation of drivetrain and chassis components, wiring harnesses and electronics. Finishing it up, 19-inch gloss-black wheels are bolted on and exterior body-colour or dark-chrome trim added, before attention is turned to the interior, complete with the customary numbered serial plaque.
When they have undergone quality control and testing inside and outside the facility, the cars are wrapped in specially designed covers and shipped to dealerships in enclosed carriers.
Among the car’s exclusive exterior features are gloss-black roof panel, diamond pentagon grille and door handles. Exclusive interior appointments include black Milano leather seats with Alcantara inserts, black piping and red stitching, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, and black piping and red stitching on the door panels and centre armrest.
A-Spec features include metal-badged premium floormats and interior sport package, exterior appearance package, LED headlights and fog lights, surround view camera system and power folding mirrors with auto-dim.
Interior appointments include GPS navigation, Acura ELS Studio 10-speaker audio system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless device charging, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and heated outboard rear seats.
