A jury of 49 automotive journalists from Canada and the United States has chosen the Cadillac ATS and Ram 1500 as the 2013 North American Car and Truck of the Year, respectively.
The winners were announced today at a ceremony in conjunction with the opening of the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The ATS won out over the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord, for top car honours. It is the first NACOTY win for Cadillac but the fifth time a General Motors vehicle has won the award.
In October, the Cadillac was voted "Best New Luxury Car" by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) at its annual TestFest. As such, the ATS is in the running for the overall Canadian Car of the Year award, the winner of which will be announced at the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) in Toronto on February 14.
The Ram 1500 pickup beat out the Ford C-Max and Mazda CX-5 to take North American Truck of the Year honours. It's the third such win for a Chrysler vehicle.
While judging is based on the voting journalists' individual preferences, criteria considered are said to include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.
Last year, the Hyundai was the North American Car of the Year and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque won the truck/utility vehicle award.
