The days of almost every new car you see being some shade of silver or grey, or seemingly so, may be over. According to a recent survey of Canadian car buyers conducted by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, Black is the new fave.

Black was the most popular response when 1500 survey participants were asked what they would like their next vehicle’s colour to be, and blue was a surprising second choice.

Silver/grey, red and white completed the top five in that order. White, in fact, has been the most common vehicle colour for the past couple years but that popularity may be swayed by large numbers of rental and commercial vehicles for which white is a common colour.

As always, DesRosiers says, there were significant differences among provincial responses, with blue the most popular choice in Quebec bit the fourth-favourite in Alberta.

Colour preferences also shifted with other variables such as age, income and type of vehicle. For example, younger drivers had a stronger preference for black cars and higher income earners tended more toward silver/grey.
