The 5 Series is already one of the world’s best performance sedans, but the M5 takes it to the next level with the high-revving engine and distinctive suspension technology, as well as M-specific design features to optimize engine cooling and aerodynamics.

The hand-built original M5 was meant to be a high-performance sedan with the manners of a sports car and the comfort and sophistication of a flagship 4-door. Power came from the 256-hp (286 hp outside North America) 3.5-litre inline 6-cylinder engine adapted from the M1 supercar (where it only made 277 hp). Five generations later, it gets power from a 625-hp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V-8, and has come to be regarded as the world’s most successful high-performance sedan.
