Daimler's world-wide car2go car-sharing service is expanding operations in Canada.
Two new Canadian car2go operations will commence this summer: one in Toronto, beginning on June 30; the other in Calgary on July 21. Member registration for both cities is now open at Toronto.car2go.com and Calgary.car2go.com, respectively.
For a limited time, people can receive 30 free minutes of driving time and have the one-time $35 membership fee waived. Promotional Codes are TDOT for Toronto, ONWARD for Calgary.
"The people who live, work and visit these cities will join the ranks of more than 50,000 car2go members in North America who have access to our service every day," said Nicholas Cole, president and CEO of car2go North America.
He added, "car2go is not only becoming a recognizable part of each new city we enter, but we are also becoming a fundamental part of people’s daily lives."
The car-sharing service launched in Canada in Vancouver in June 2011 with 225 cars, 2,000 members, and an average of 1,500 trips per week. By early this year, there were more than 10,000 car2go members in Vancouver, and the number of trips per week had increased to more than 8,000.
To meet the demands of this increased utilization, an additional 100 car2go smart fortwo cars were be added to the Vancouver network and will be available for members to use collaboratively, beginning in April. The Vancouver operation is also the site of a pilot program several smart fortwo electric drive.
Developed four years in Stuttgart, car2go currently provides more than 4,000 smart fortwo vehicles (including 625 electric drive cars) for shared use by more than 100,000 members worldwide.
Collectively car2go members have taken more than two million trips throughout 11 cities worldwide. The number of car2go cities, members, and trips have more than doubled within the past six months.
The car2g0 cars are available for members' use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Members can pick one up and drop it off anywhere within the defined car2go Home Area – they do not have to drive it car back to its original location or commit to a predetermined amount of time.
They simply drive the car for as long as they need it, park it at their destination, and end the rental by swiping their card on the windshield reader. At that point the car becomes available for the next member to use.
Members pay by the minute only for the actual time they use the car, with discounted rates for hourly and daily use. There is no mandatory minimum time. Parking fees, fuel, maintenance and insurance are included at no additional cost, and there are no annual or monthly fees.
Members can find a car when they need one via a smart phone app, online at car2go.com, by calling the customer call center, or by simply locating an available car2go on the street.
They can also reserve a vehicle up to 24 hours in advance, although reservations are not required. Members have unrestricted and unlimited access to car2go vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The car2go service is currently operational in five North-American cities: Austin, Texas; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Diego, California; Washington, D.C.; and Portland, Oregon. Miami, Florida, as well as Calgary and Toronto, will be aded to that list this summer.
