The Chevrolet Spark mini-car will carry a starting price of $13,495 (plus $1500 destination charge) when it goes on sale in Canada later this year.

Smaller than the compact Chevrolet Aveo, the Korean-built Spark will compete in the same size category as the Fiat 500, Scion iQ and Smart ForTwo. According to General Motors, it offers more passenger and cargo space than any of those competitors.

A sporty, fuel-efficient, five-door hatchback with four-passenger seating, the Spark is aimed at first-time car buyers and city dwellers. To that end, it features bold styling with attention-grabbing colours with such evocative names as Salsa, Jalapeno, Denim, Lemonade and Techno Pink.

GM also touts the car's "engaging driving dynamics," as well as the personalized connectivity of MyLink and the safety of 10 standard air bags.

To keep the buying process simple, GM has chosen to minimize the number of stand-alone options and add more standard content to each of the three available trim levels – LS, 1LT and 2LT.

All Sparks are powered by a 1.2L Ecotec four-cylinder engine, with a five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. A four-speed automatic is optional.

Standard convenience features including power windows, rear window wiper, auxiliary input jack, outside temperature display and trip computer. Aluminum 15-inch wheels, a 60/40 split flip-and-fold rear seat and a safety package that includies 10 airbags, electronic stability control with traction control and brake assist are also standard.

So is OnStar, with a Directions & Connections plan, including a six-month introductory subscription to the service.

To that base, all included in the LS model, the 1LT ($16,995) adds air conditioning, a 7-inch colour touch radio with Chevrolet MyLink, Bluetooth connectivity for select phones, steering wheel audio controls, a USB port and Sirius XM Radio with three-month trial subscription.

Other LT1 features include power door locks with remote keyless entry, theft deterrent system, outside power mirrors, floor mats, visor mirrors, and cruise control.

The top 2LT model ($18,495) ups the ante further, adding special 15-inch aluminum two-tone wheels, fog lamps, various exterior moldings and other appearance enhancements, including body-colour front and rear fascias with grille inserts.

Inside, it includes leatherette seats, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
