When Dodge decided to inject some fun into its line-up with some muscle cars and pony cars, it took it a step farther by also having fun with their exterior paint names – TorRed, SubLime, Go Mango and Lemon Twist, to name but a few – and when it got nostalgic with new models in the 21st Century, it also got nostalgic with the exterior colours.

One of the most treasured ones was the purple Plum Crazy, and it has made sporadic appearances in Charger and Challenger models since the cars were re-imagined in 2006 and 2008, respectively. For 2016,t will be coating the Challenger 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker and Charger R/T Scat Pack models, as well as others in the lineup.

The new colour will debut at Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise and, as with previous appearances in the model lineups, it will be available in limited numbers and available for order only through the end of 2015.

“With our strongest muscle-car arsenal ever, we knew it was time to reach into our Dodge paint code archive and offer our high-performance R/T Scat Pack and SRT Hellcat models in one of the most iconic exterior colors of all time,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and Chief Executive Officer – Dodge Brand and SRT Brand, FCA – North America. “Powerful muscle cars painted in impactful colors make Woodward Dream Cruise the perfect setting for Dodge to debut the newest generation Challenger and Charger models in Plum Crazy.”

“From the aggressive and in-your-face styling of the SRT Hellcat models, the reverberating black stripes on our Shaker models, to the nostalgic dual A-line side stripes in satin black or gloss white on the R/T Classic model – Plum Crazy further builds on Dodge brand’s muscle-car roots and adds to Challenger and Charger’s vibrant legacy,” added Mark Trostle, Head of Dodge and SRT Design, FCA US LLC.

Although there are some restrictions, Plum Crazy will be available on every trim of 2016 Challenger – SXT Plus (305-hp 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission), all R/Ts (5.7-litre Hemi V8 with either six-speed manual or paddle-shift TorqueFlite auto), Scat Packs and SRT 392 (485-hp 6.4 Hemi V8 manual and auto), and SRT Hellcat (707-hp supercharged 6.2 Hemi V8 with manual or auto transmission). In the 2016 Charger, it will be available on SXT, R/T, Scat Pack, and SRT 392 and Hellcat.

Dodge’s iconic limited production paint treatments account for just about 11 percent of all Challengers and Chargers since their relaunch in the mid- to late-2000s.
