Ford has announced a new generation of the Fiesta ST performance hatchback, with a new 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes almost 200 hp, will debut at the Geneva International Motor Show.

The new 2018 Fiesta ST (available in both 3-door and 5-door bodystyles) marks the debut of the first Ford Performance 3-cylinder engine, but the new car also features drive modes (Normal, Sport and Track) that allows the driver to adjust steering, engine mapping, throttle response, traction and stability control (which can further be adjusted three ways, including completely off), and exhaust sound.

“Our next generation Fiesta ST is true to the philosophy of delivering cutting-edge technology to enhance every facet of the responsive Ford Performance chassis and powertrain,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford of Europe’s vice president of product development. “With selectable Drive Modes and an all-new EcoBoost engine delivering an unprecedented combination of performance and fuel-efficiency, the new model will deliver the most versatile, fun, engaging and rewarding Fiesta ST driving experience yet.”

The all-aluminum turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine makes 197 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque, pulling the diminutive sport compact to 100 km/h in a reported 6.7 seconds. It also features cylinder deactivation (shutting down one cylinder when coasting or cruising under low engine load) to return even better fuel economy and reduced carbon emissions than you’d expect from a 3-cyl engine.

The drive mode control adjusts Electronic Sound Enhancement (ESE) technology and active exhaust noise control, to add a satisfying exhaust note when desired. It rides on exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels.

The cars also feature a wider degree of personalization inside, from gear lever and steering wheel trim, door pulls and decorative instrument panel inlays, and distinctive styling packs. A flat-bottom steering wheel and Recaro sport seats are standard fitments, as is Sync 3 (which is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) with a choice of touchscreens (up to 8 inches) that accept the familiar smartphone swipe and pinch controls. A high-quality B&O Play sound system from Bang & Olufsen is also available.

“Our ST models are designed to make a Ford Performance driving experience accessible to customers regardless of lifestyle,” concludes Matthias Tonn, Fiesta ST chief programme engineer. “With 3- and 5-door bodystyles and distinctive styling options that complement the model’s performance characteristics available from day-one, the next generation Fiesta ST will deliver a broader appeal for an even wider range of car-buyers.”
