General Motors is recalling 686,000 crossover utility vehicles to inspect and replace, if necessary, the gas struts that make it easier to open liftgates.

The recall affects 2009 through 2012 model year Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverses and GMC Acadias. It also includes Enclaves and Acadias from 2008, and Saturn Outlooks from 2007 through 2010

According to a report from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the gas struts on the vehicles’ power liftgates could prematurely wear out, causing the liftgate to either not lift properly (or at all) or to suddenly come slamming down, if they were open. There have been 56 cases of injury related to the issue.

The repair involves replacing the strut but also updating the software that controls the power operation to prevent the sudden closing.
