It's a slow news day here at Autofile.ca, but we know you're out there somewhere enjoying a long weekend. It's not the most spiritual of holidays, granted, but we never turn down a reason for a four-day work week.

In the spirit of near-meaningless celebration, let's look back almost a year (eek!) to last year's Frankfurt Show, where VW unveiled the high-performance Beetle R.

Dubbed a concept but earmarked for production according to VW North America CEO Jonathan Browning in LA in November, the R Concept features the same R powertrain as the Golf R and Scirocco R, a 256-hp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four and AWD.

Atop 20-inch Talladega alloys around blue brake calipers, the exterior features a unique, larger-than-standard-Beetle front fascia, flared fenders, and a unique rear diffuser. And of course, some Serious Grey paint. Inside, it's all nappa leather sport seats and high-gloss black trim.

We don't expect the production version to be exactly like it, but we are expecting the high-output four-cylinder and AWD. When? Dunno. Hello? VW? We'd like to know when, please.
