Making special editions of cars to commemorate animated characters is not new, with perhaps the most notable being the series of Kias in the liveries of members of the Justice League, but Honda may be a first to commemorate a video-game character with its special Sonic Civic.

Video-game maker Sega has partnered with Honda to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog character with a custom version of the top selling car in Canada, in particular the new turbocharged 2016 Civic Touring sedan. The car made its public debut at Comic Con in San Diego.

“What better way to showcase the incredibly sporty performance capability of the 10th generation Civic than by pairing it with gaming industry's ultimate athlete – Sonic the Hedgehog,” said James Jenkins, Public Relations Manager for the Honda Division. “As the fan favorite game and character celebrates his 25th anniversary on the scene, we hope that all Sonic fans – those who remember playing years ago and those who continue playing today – rejoice in his all-new ride, as much as we enjoyed creating it.”

Conceptualized and created by Pennsylvania’s Fox Marketing Cars, the Sonic Civic includes custom wheels and tires, with the rear painted in red to represent Sonic’s red runners and the front in gold to represent the golden rings he’s always chasing.

The bespoke paint job includes a Sonic Black grille, Sonic Blue body panels, and Sonic Yellow trim bits such as the Honda emblem. The interior features Katzkin Blue leather seats front and rear, embroidered with Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary logos.

And because it’s a gaming commemoration, the trunk is fitted with an audio-visual system featuring two 500-watt 10-inch subwoofers, two 400-watt amplifiers, and a floor-mounted 32-inch monitor that flips up for video game fans to play classic game.
