The Kona Ironman is not news to anybody who has been participating in triathlons for the past 40 years, but now Hyundai is making a Kona Iron Man limited edition, and it has nothing to do with swimming, cycling and running.
The Iron Man Edition of the 2019 Hyundai Kona is actually a co-branding project with Marvel, and the car is actually done up in tribute to the superhero, coming complete with exterior and interior nods to the Iron Man suit(s). It was introduced at the world-famous San Diego Comic-Con in 2018.
The bespoke features include matte grey and red exterior paint with Stark Industries emblazoned on the rear doors, Iron-grip dual-tone 18-inch alloy wheels with the Iron Man mask centre caps, Iron Man emblems on the front fenders and projected by the puddle lamps, Iron Man mask and Marvel logo on the roof, and a red hood bezel with the Marvel logo.
Inside, you get leather seats with red stitching and piping, Stark Industries logos on the front headrests and Iron Man image on the backrests, Iron Man eyes display on the instrument panel and instrument cluster on start-up, and the Stark Industries Arc Reactor on display backgrounds and on the shift knob. And to finish it off, Tony Stark signs off on it (displayed on the instrument panel, above the glove box).
Down-to-Earth power is provided by the 175-hp 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, reigned in by the 7-speed dual clutch automatic.
Deliveries start March 1, with pricing and numbers yet to be announced for North America. The global production run is 7,000 vehicles, with 1,700 staying in Korea.
