For the second year in a row, Infiniti will be bringing an electric concept to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and like last year’s Prototype 9, it looks as if this will also be a single seater racecar, though it’s hard to tell from the teaser image released by the company.
And that’s what makes for a confusing release, which new executive design director Karim Habib described as “providing clues to where the Infiniti brand is heading,” as it heads toward electrification in 2021.
Infiniti states it is meant to signal the company’s intent to deliver driving enjoyment and thrilling performance even with electrified powertrains by building powerful, efficient cars that are a joy to drive.
The image seems to look down into the cockpit of an open race car (with a moulded seat, 4-point harness and small steering wheel) ahead of an “engine” cowl with Infiniti imprinted on either side. We’re not sure if the piece to the right of the cockpit is a canopy that fits over the driver.
The Prototype 9 was a retro-styled roadster inspired by single-seater open-wheel race cars from the 1940s, if they had been built with today’s technology and production know-how.
In spring of this year, Infiniti also confirmed its intent to produce an electric platform based on the Q Inspiration concept, with the first product being a sedan that will come to market in the coming five years.
More information about the new performance concept will be available at its reveal August 23.
