When you think of fleet vehicles, if you ever do, chances are you envision something like a (past-generation) Chevrolet Impala or Dodge Sebring – the lunchboxes of rental car fleets across the continent.
But there's much more to the fleet business than daily rentals and what's happening in that business can provide valuable information when shopping for a personal vehicle.
Which is where the Vincentric Canadian Fleet Awards come in. Each year, Vincentric, a U.S.-based automotive data compilation and analysis firm, conducts a total-cost-of-ownership analysis of vehicles available for the fleet market to determine which provide the best value over their life-cycle.
Unlike surveys and analyses conducted by some other American based firms, the Vincentric study includes Canada and for the past three years they've published separate results and award winners for Canada based on Canadian data.
To do so, Vincentric analyzed over 1,900 vehicle configurations in 24 different lifecycle cost scenarios, using eight cost factors including depreciation, fees and taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost and repairs.
The results? For 2014, Nissan and Toyota the top spot, with General Motors not far behind in third.
The two Asian brands each won a total of eight Vincentric awards, while GM claimed seven, led by its Buick and Cadillac brands. Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and Ford each earned four awards each.
"With a three-year history of fleet awards in Canada, we are noticing some trends," said David Wurster, president of Vincentric.
"The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the Toyota hybrids have had strong performances all three years, with GM and Ford also consistently delivering numerous award winners. The Nissan line-up and Ram trucks also had a strong presence in the awards this year, which will give fleet operators a wide range of choices when using total cost of ownership to help guide their vehicle selections."
