The 2014 Kia Forte sedan, which made its debut at the Los Angeles auto show last November, will be joined by a 5-door hatchback model that's scheduled to go on sale in the third quarter of this year.
The Forte 5-door was revealed to the automotive media today at the Chicago auto show.
Longer, lower and wider than the sedan, the 5-door combines European style with the practicality of a hatchback – a combination that typically finds favour with Canadian buyers.
Adding to its appeal, in sporty SX trim the Forte 5-door will feature an all-new 1.6-litre gasoline direct-injected (GDI) and turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with a peak output of 201 horsepower and a broad195 lb-ft torque plateau that extends over the yseful speed range from 1,750-to-4,500 rpm.
It will be available with either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the latter featuring steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The base EX model will be powered by a 2.0-litre GDI four-cylinder engine, rated at 173 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque, and it will be available only with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Inside, the 5-ddor is said to feature premium materials and soft touch points. Class-exclusive available features include heated front and rear outboard seats, an air-cooled driver’s seat and driver-selectable electric steering.
Confirming the utility of the hatchback design, the rear liftgate opens to reveal 657 litres of usable cargo space behind the rear seat.
The base EX model comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels; the SX with 18-inch.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise control buttons, tilt and telescoping steering column, power windows, and LED positioning headlights with fog lights are standard on all models (U.S.specs; Canadian specs yet to be confirmed).
All 5-doors feature a sport-tuned suspension with McPherson struts in front and a multilink rear design.
Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
