Kia to offer all-electric vehicle

Electric version of all-new Soul scheduled to arrive in 2014

If Kia were to introduce an electric version of an existing model, the Soul would seem to be an obvious candidate for that treatment. They will and it is.

Kia’s first EV for North America will be a modified version of the redesigned 2014 Soul, which made its public debut at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

Kia says the Soul EV will be introduced in "selected markets" sometime next year. Whether or not Canada will be among those selected markets was not disclosed, but if Kia follows the pattern set by other EV makers, it's likely to be sold first in California, with other markets phased in some time later.

The EV is said to have distinctive styling cues aimed at improving aerodynamics and distinguishing it from non-EV Souls

More details about the electric Soul’s powertrain, range, equivalent fuel economy, packaging and market strategy will be announced at an upcoming major U.S. auto show, the company says. Los Angeles would seem to be the logical venue.

Images of the Soul EV will be released closer to its launch in 2014.
