In honour of what would have been its founder’s 100th birthday, Lamborghini created a Centenario coupe, offering to build just 20 of them for privileged buyers. Now the company has announced a Centenario roadster, also limited to 20 builds.

“Lamborghini prides itself on the relentless pursuit of experimentation. We are proud to unleash Centenario’s further potential in the form of a classic roadster; the perfect harmony between innovation and timeless design,” said Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chief Executive Officer, at the car’s unveiling. “This unique engineering achievement is a befitting tribute to Lamborghini’s extraordinary past and a preview of its brilliant future. Centenario Roadster embraces the cutting edge characteristics of its coupé sibling and embraces the freedom of a true open-top super sports car for a pure drive experience.”

Introduced at the prestigious exclusive car gathering The Quail, in Monterey, California, the roadsters start at 2 million Euros (just shy of $3 million Canadian) and like the coupes (which start at 1.75 million Euros or $2.55 million Canadian), they’re all spoken for. It also features a new signature exterior colour — Argento Centenario matte silver — in addition to whatever colour the new owner might want (or even just exposed carbon fibre).

Also like the coupes, power comes from a 770-hp naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre V12, sending power to the rear wheels, which are also steerable to enhance stability during high-speed cornering or lane changes, and improve low speed manoeuvrability. The car is carbon-fibre intensive (both the monocoque and various body parts, such as lower bodysides, front diffuser and the rear wing that extends at speed to provide more downforce) to keep weight down (it weighs in at just 1,570 kg).

Zero to 100 km/h takes less than 3 seconds, and 100 to zero takes an equally impressive 31 m (102 feet) to accomplish. Top speed is limited to 350 km/h.

The interior is light brown Alcantara with the seats featuring white inlays, piping and accent stitching, as well as accent stitching on the instrument panel and other leather panels. The main interior feature is a 10.1-inch touchscreen that controls just about anything from a new fully connected infotainment system to navigation and ventilation systems. Two optional interior cameras allow the driver to record driving experiences.
