Lexus is taking winter tires to a new level with the creation of ice wheels for the new NX.
They aren’t standard equipment or even an option, unfortunately, but a one-off production by a team of ice sculptors to convey the Lexus ideal of creating “amazing” and “inspired” products by craftspeople. An ideal the company continuously pushes with all its products.
In this instance, the vision was crafted into replacements for the alloy metal and rubber at all four corners of the NX. It should be noted the carving and drilling of the wheels precluded them from fully fitting within the confines of the wheel wells. They were reportedly researched, designed and tested for three months prior to being mounted on the vehicle and then driven on.
The NX on which they were mounted was deep frozen for five days in a climatic wind tunnel at -30 Celsius, presumably to ensure they didn’t start melting as soon as they were mounted on a “room temperature” wheel hub.
The vehicle reportedly started right away and off it went down a London road on the ice wheels, infused with in-wheel LED lighting to add a modicum of dramatics to the vehicle and the road-test, whose creation and maiden run can be seen on Youtube (Lexus on Ice: NX Ice Wheels).
