Virtual racers got an early Christmas gift from Mazda, when they installed a free Holiday Season Update for their Gran Turismo 6 game on their Playstation 3s and were presented with the opportunity to pilot the new Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo race car.

The car was introduced in a five-minute video that blends the warmth of an animated community Christmas in an auto-show reveal setting before cutting away to Mazda designers from around the globe talking about the creation of the virtual car.

Mazda worked closely with Polyphony Digital Inc., the creators of the Gran Turismo franchise to create the Le Mans type race car the companies say pays tribute to the famed Mazda 787B race car that raced to victory in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A powerfully dynamic forward-leaning silhouette is meant convey speed and agility, while the now-common Mazda KODO design language puts forth a jovially, aggressive face reminiscent of the recently introduced MX-5 roadster.

The car exists only in the virtual world for now, as Mazda strives to touch base with present and future customers through media such as the gaming world.

Still, we wouldn’t bet against Mazda creating a version for the real world as it comes up on the 25th anniversary (in 2016) of its heralded victory at Le Mans.
