As much of Canada and the northern States is pummeled by winter’s rage, Mazda is countering the miserable conditions with a bit of warmth — the announcement of the MX-5 sports car lineup for 2018, which includes new colours inside and out.

The biggest change is the availability of a Dark Cherry soft top, which will look especially stunning and offer a premium look to the new Machine Grey Metallic body (which was previously only available on the coupe-like RF retractable fastback model). The exterior will also be available in new Soul Red Crystal, and the interior will include an Auburn Nappa leather option (previously only available on the RF Launch Edition). Other new exterior colours include Eternal Blue Mica and Snowflake White Pearl Mica.

But the changes aren’t only skin-deep, with fine tuning to the soft-top’s rear suspension and steering to provide an enhanced level of handling, above and beyond what’s come to be expected from the well-put-together little car, as well as reducing levels of noise and harshness.

Also new, a Brembo/BBS package adds front Bembro brakes, forged 17-inch BBS wheels, aerodynamic side sill extensions and a rear bumper skirt outside, and heated black leather seats inside (with the option of moving up to leather trimmed, heated Recaro sport seats).

Power continues to be supplied by the 155-hp 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder engine and sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual or optional 6-speed paddle-shift automatic.

The 2018 MX-5 soft top goes on sale early in the new year.
