Mazda Canada says the launch of the 2016 Mazda2 in Canada has been delayed until the 2016 calendar year.
The all-new Mazda2 (called Demio in other markets), made its North American debut at the Montreal auto show in January. Initially it was scheduled to go on sale here in late-summer 2015.
The company said in a statement that it, "decided to postpone the launch of the Mazda2 in Canada in order to focus on the launches of the all-new 2016 CX-3 and all-new 2016 MX-5."
Mazda2s for the Canadian market will be built at Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation (MMVO), the company's new plant in Salamanca, Mexico, where production began last fall.
That plant also builds Mazda3s and is scheduled to build a rebadged variant of the Mazda2 for Toyota as a replacement for the Yaris. A further plant expansion to increase production capacity is expected to be complete in March 2016.
The Mazda2 (Demio) is built for other markets at the company's Hofu Plant in Japan, where production started in July 2014, and at Auto Alliance (Thailand), where production began in September 2014. It was named the Japanese Car of the Year last fall.
