McLaren opens up new owners’ opportunities for the 675LT with the introduction of a roadster version.

The 1,270-kg 675LT Spider (only the second model to wear the LT, or Longtail, logo) features lightweight construction that shaves 100 kg off its predecessor (and just 40 kg more than the coupe model despite the retractable roof’s structure), and a heavily revised twin-turbo 3.8-litre V-8 that puts out 666 hp and 516 lb-ft to get it to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and to 200 km/h in 8.1 seconds, making it the fastest and most exhilarating open-top model to wear the McLaren badge. Top speed is rated at 326 km/h.

It is also the fifth new McLaren introduced in 2015 following the P1 GTR, 570S, 540C and the coupe 675LT. There will only be 500 available, priced from £285,450 (about $577,000 Canadian). The car features extensive use of carbon fibre bodywork (among the pieces are front and rear bumpers, side skirts, rear fenders, the Longtail airbrake and the MonoCell chassis) but of prime interest is the 3-piece retractable folding hardtop that can be opened at speeds up to 30 km/h and stows beneath a body colour tonneau, while allowing the engine to remain visible.

As for colours, the exterior features the full McLaren palette (Silica White, Delta Red, Napier Green and Chicane Grey), as well as the new exclusive Solis deep gold. The heritage McLaren Orange is added for details such as brake calipers, embossed leather and stitching.

The suspension is borrowed from the coupe model, with the front sitting on new lightweight springs that are also stiffer by 27% (the rear springs are 63% stiffer), and the car rides on 10-spoke Ultra-Lightweight forged alloy wheels (upgradable to a choice of two Super Lightweight forged alloys) of 19-inch diameter at the front and 20-inch at the rear, shod with Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R tires.

The interior features exposed carbon fibre trim pieces and carbon fibre framed racing-style seats (all in keeping with the theme of reducing weight), complete with openings to fit a racing-harness style belt system. The leather upholstery features 675LT embossed in the headrests, and can be stitched in contrasting colours. The instrument panel features a portrait-oriented touchscreen display to control, audio, navigation and heating/ventilation.
