McLaren Automotive has announced the launch of a second model in its MP4-12C family. The 12C Spider features a unique Retractable Hard Top folding-roof system that can be operated while on the move at speeds up to 30 km/h.
The open-topped supercar features a 616-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine driving the rear wheels via a seven-speed SSG transmission and the same carbon ‘MonoCell’ chassis used in the 12C coupe.
It is expected to accelerate from 0-to-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds, run the quarter-mile in 10.8 and achieve a top speed of 329 km/h.
McLaren bills the 12C Spider as a luxury convertible sports car that offers prospective owners a unique combination of spectacular performance with remarkable usability.
Its Retractable Hard Top, which is operated by a switch on the centre console, takes less than 17 seconds to raise or lower.
Behind the driver and passenger, there is a rear windscreen that can be electronically lowered and raised. With the roof lowered it acts as wind deflector to minimize disturbance to the 12C Spider’s occupants. With the roof raised and the rear window lowered, the raucous noise of the twin-turbo V-8 is allowed to inundate the cabin, on demand.
With the roof raised the area under the tonneau can be used as an additional luggage area, providing 52 litres of useful storage space. Bespoke luggage has been designed specifically to fit this space and is supplied as standard with every 12C Spider.
The car also features a passive Roll Over Protection System to maximize occupant safety. Each roof buttress contains a steel structure designed to absorb impact energy and protect both driver and passenger.
The Spider will be launched in a Volcano Red colour with Volcano Yellow available as an option.
Inside, all 2013 12C models feature exclusive new interior trim. High quality semi-aniline perforated leather and Alcantara can be selected in a variety of combinations to suit an owner’s personal taste.
A new wheel design, and ‘Diamond Cut’ finishes for existing lightweight and super lightweight forged wheel designs can also be selected for the 12C Spider. Standard Silver or Stealth finishes are offered for all wheel designs.
Vehicle Lift will be available as an option on 2013 coupes as well as the Spider. The system allows the 12C to be raised by up to 40 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear for improved ground clearance, and to remain in position up to 60 km/h.
The new 12C Spider is now available to order from 38 McLaren retailers in 22 countries around the globe, including McLaren Toronto, operated by Pfaff Automotive Partners – the sole Canadian McLaren outlet.
The 12C Spider will be priced from £195,500 in the UK, where first deliveries to customers are planned for November of this year. Canadian pricing has not yet been released.
