Mini is taking OEM personalization to a new level by allowing customers to design certain parts for their cars, and then have them 3D-printed out and delivered for installation within a few weeks.
Under the Mini Yours Customised program, customers will be able to design personalized inlays for the side fender markers, passenger side interior trim, LED door sills and LED door projectors, using the company’s new online customizer and then produced with 3D printing and laser lettering technologies at Mini production facilities in Germany. Customers can also integrate their own texts and even a signature into the customized design.
Installation can be done by the customer or by a Mini dealer or service partner, and can be repeated as often as the customer desires. The parts can also be swapped back out for the originals when the vehicle is sold.
Mini Yours Customised is the latest individualization initiative from the company whose customers pride individualization. Mini already offers comprehensive opportunities for personalization, allowing customers to choose from a long list of optional accents (colours, patterns, surface finishes and icons) and having them fitted during the design process.
The 3D printers used in this process are configured for the BMW Group by partners Hewlett-Packard Inc., Carbon Inc. and EOS GmbH, with the three now able to work the high-grade plastics for the parts to BMW’s high standards for form, functionality and safety.
The online customizer guides the user through a series of steps, choosing colours, patterns and finishes, with the latter two scalable to customers’ desires. Users can also choose from a list of thematically-chosen colours and logos, such as leisure activities, travel and Mini history. Text fields are provided for customers to enter their personal messages, scale them and position them within the part template.
The customization will work for specific models of the current generation of vehicles, as well as predecessors, providing those are already equipped with the proper parts in the appropriate sizes.
