Porsche is expanding its role in the luxury crossover segment with a new coupe variant on the mid-size Cayenne.
Under the new skin, the Coupe has all the good things that go into Cayenne but spices it up with a few new enhancements. In addition to the swooping rear quarters, the body also has sharper lines and a high adaptive rear spoiler (based on that of the Cayenne Turbo), and can be fitted with a fixed panoramic glass or optional carbon fibre roof.
Inside, there’s room for just four, in 8-way adjustable sport seats up front and a rear 2-seat bench (which can be swapped at no cost for individual seats), protected from the sun by an integrated sun shade in the glass roof. Rear passengers sit 30 mm lower to account for the sloping roof. Cargo volumes go from 623 litres to 1,537 depending on what you do with the rear seatbacks (600 to 1,509 litres in the Turbo).
The roof can be swapped for a carbon fibre panel as part of one of three lightweight sport packages, which also include Sport Design features and 22-inch GT Design wheels. The packages also include carbon fibre interior panels, Alcantara seats and trimmings, and Pepita inserts in the seats. Turbo Coupe gets a Sport exhaust system as part of its Sport Design package.
Standard equipment includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Sport Chrono Package and 20-inch wheels. Also standard, a deployable spoiler at the bottom of the rear window extends 135 mm outward from the bodywork at 90 km/h.
Standard power is the standard Cayenne’s 3.0-litre turbocharged V-6, making 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, while the Turbo Coupe gets the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V-8 making 541 and 567, respectively. Zero to 100 km/h times are in the six second range for the standard vehicle and around four seconds for the Turbo, with top speeds of 243 and 286 km/h, respectively.
Immediately evident on the outside is the fastback-type design, accentuated by the spoiler at the top of the rear window, but the front is also slightly revised, with shallower A-pillar and windshield and a roof that sits 20 mm lower. The design necessitated redesigned doors, and the rear quarter panels. The rear license plate has been moved to the bumper, adding to the illusion that the vehicle sits lower to the ground.
Vehicles are expected in showrooms in the fall as 2020 model year vehicles, priced between $75,300 and $130,100 US (Canadian pricing has not yet been announced).
