Who would have believed, when it was introduced a decade ago, that the big Cayenne SUV would become the best-selling model in the Porsche lineup? But that is exactly what has happened.

As it has done so effectively with its more traditional models, Porsche has kept the Cayenne evolving – most recently with the announcement of a new Turbo S model.

The new Turbo S has a rated power output of 550 hp, an increase of 50 hp from the current Cayenne Turbo. It also boasts a torque increase of 37 lb-ft, from the Turbo's 516 to 553 lb-ft.

The combined effect is to reduce the 0-to-96 km/ h acceleration time by 0.1 seconds to 4.3 seconds and raise the top speed by more than 5 km/h to 282 km/h.

According to Porsche, the Turbo S also employs advanced active chassis technologies that enable it to surpass the driving performance of many sports cars, while preserving the SUV's off-road capability, ride comfort and towing ability.

Features that are optional on The Cayenne Turbo, including Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), and Power Steering Plus are standard on the Turbo S.

The Turbo S also makes standard Porsche's Sport Chrono package, which includes an analog and digital timer located at the center of the instrument panel. The performance display informs occupants of total driving time, lap distance covered and individual lap times.

It also shows latitudinal and longitudinal acceleration via a TFT display in the instrument cluster.

Exterior changes on the Turbo S include front air intakes and rear-view mirror trim painted in high-gloss black, as are the inside surfaces of its standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels.

The wheel arch extensions and rear spoiler separation edge are painted body colour and dual twin-tube sport tailpipes are finished in polished aluminum.

Inside is an exclusive two-tone leather package available in either Black/Carrera Red or Black/Luxor Beige combinations. Front and rear seats feature the Porsche Crest embossed on the headrests while the roof is covered in Alcantara from front to rear.

A carbon-fibre interior package highlights the instrument panel, door, and centre console trim.

The Cayenne Turbo S is scheduled to go on sale in the spring of 2013. Canadian pricing has not yet been released. It will have an MSRP of (US) $146,000 in the United States.
