Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling over 1.4 million pickups to deal with tailgates that may come unlatched overtime.
The recall affects Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from model years 2015 through 2017. On those vehicles, the power locking mechanisms on their tailgates may have a small internal component that could break over time, which might cause the pickup tailgate to come unlatched.
The problem was detected in an internal investigation and FCA is not aware of any incidents related to the issue. Trucks equipped with manual-latching tailgates are not included in the recall, and neither are pickups fitted with the 8-foot bed or the new 2019 trucks, which have a new power mechanism.
The recall affects 1,405,108 pickups, the bulk of which are in the US, with 260,315 in Canada, 19,432 in Mexico and 25,361 outside North America.
Customers will be notified when replacement parts become available, and FCA is reminding customers to secure cargo while driving. Cargo securing features available in Ram pickups include tie-down rings and cleats, high-friction bedliners, cargo dividers and bed-extenders.
