Land Rover is shooting for the stars with an Astronaut Edition for the Range Rover Autobiography, to celebrate its 5-year partnership with Virgin Galactic.

The exclusive Range Rover Astronaut Edition is produced by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) and will only be available to members of Virgin Galactic’s Future Astronaut community, made up of people signed up to fly into space with Virgin Galactic.

“Land Rover vehicles have been part of daily life for the Virgin Galactic team since the launch of the partnership in 2014,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer. “The Astronaut Edition Range Rover is the next step on this journey and the chance for the Future Astronaut Community to celebrate our two brands’ shared values of pioneering spirit and true sense of adventure.”

The exterior is painted a unique Zero Gravity Blue, reportedly inspired by lighting of the night sky, and features bespoke design cues, such as a puddle lamp projection featuring the silhouette of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, and Astronaut Edition badging on the tailgate and side profile finishers.

The interior design includes unique touches, such as custom cupholder discs crafted from the Virgin Spaceship Unity’s front landing skid (from its maiden flight in December 2018), one of them embossed with the Richard Branson salute to future astronauts — “See you up there” — the other with the details of the future astronaut’s flight. After the trip into space, the second disc will be replaced by a part of the wooden skid from the astronaut’s flight.

Also inside, the “DNA of Flight” graphic adorns the carbon fibre console lid between the front seats and is embroidered into the rear leather armrest, and solid aluminum door handles with the Future Astronaut constellation pattern (also replicated on the rear of the front headrests and metal letterbox panel above the glovebox. The owner of the vehicle can also have his/her initials stitched onto the headrests.

Based on the Range Rover Autobiography, the Astronaut Edition gets power from the 518-hp P525 5.0-litre supercharged V-8 or the P400e plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, that puts out a net 398 hp and has an electric-range of 42 km.
