Retired seven-time F1 champ Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after suffering a fall while on a private ski trip in the French Alps. Reports from local French media and the Associated Press say Schumacher, who staying in the resort town of Meribel, hit his head on a rock late Sunday morning. After initial treatment following the accident, Schumacher was moved to Grenoble, where he is under the care of Paris-based brain and spinal injury specialist Professor Gerard Saillant, who flew in to treat Schumacher.

The French Mountain Gendarmerie reported that Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he fell, and in initial reports that his life was not in danger. The resort issued a release saying Schumacher was conscious when rescuers arrived. His condition has since been downgraded to critical.

Schumacher's 14-year-old son was with him at the Meribel resort. The resort reported they were skiing off-piste, or off marked trails in the backcountry.
