Subaru showed a concept version of its next-generation WRX performance car at the New York auto show this spring. When that car will progress to production status is still uncertain but we do know it won't be as a 2014 model.
Subaru Canada has just released details of the 2014 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, including the addition of a new trim edition to its lineup.
It's called the Tsurugi (pronounced TSUE-roo-ghee) edition, after the name of a traditional Japanese two-sided broadsword. Subaru says it's a fitting moniker as the STI featuress the double-benefits of enhanced performance and styling.
It includes 18-inch Enkei cast alloy wheels with a five-split-spoke design, multi-reflector halogen fog lights, Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights and mirror-integrated LED turn signals.
STI's traditional rear spoiler has been removed and an exclusively designed front lip spoiler has been added, modifying airflow below the front bumper to generate downforce and improve stability at high speeds.
Inside, the Tsurugi gains a power sunroof, automatic climate control, auto-dimming mirror, Sirius XM Radio and a Kicker 10-inch subwoofer. For the first time ever in the WRX STI lineup, the special edition also includes leather seating surfaces.
Tsurugi edition models will be readily identifiable by unique badging, exclusive to this trim level.
At its core, the WRX STI has always been about power and control and the additin of the new model doesn't change that focus.
All STIs are powered by a 305-horsepower, turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder boxer engine, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, driving Subaru's vaunted symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive system with an exclusive Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD).
The car's "wide and low" design gives it an aggressive stance, with wide front and rear track dimensions, emphasized by pronounced front fenders and rear quarter panels.
SI-DRIVE allows the driver to tailor the car's driving characteristics by choosing from among three selectable modes – Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp – using a rotary dial on the centre console.
The Multi-Mode VDC system offers the driver three settings: VDC Normal, Traction, and Off. The Normal setting provides the highest level of system engagement, with traction control (TCS) and VDC. The Traction setting employs less-restrictive VDC and disengages the engine torque-reduction control, while the Off setting disengages the VDC and the traction control functions entirely.
Also exclusive to the WRX STI is a Brembo Performance Brake System with ventilated 4-wheel disc brakes, Super Sport ABSand Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
Using input from a lateral g-sensor, a steering angle sensor, a yaw sensor and a brake pressure sensor, Super Sport ABS can control the braking forces at each rear wheel independently, to optimize braking ability during hard cornering and help reduce understeer.
