The Tesla Model X will be attending its first auto show and it has chosen the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, after debuting in fall 2015 at a special ceremony at Tesla’s company headquarters in Freemont, California.
The much anticipated utility vehicle has promised to defy the boundaries of electrification and utility vehicle design, with propulsion available to take the hulking crossover utillity vehicle to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds yet still allow it to travel upwards of 400 km on a full charge.
In the design field, the main feature are gullwing rear doors (or falcon-wing doors, as the company promotes in order to distance the design from the iconic Mercedes/AMG performance coupes) that promise to make getting in and out of the rear seats much easier and safer in tight spaces. It also features an automated driver’s door that opens when the proximity setting of the key transponder is breached and then closes when the driver is seated.
The announcement comes on the heels of Tesla CEO Elon Musk announcing a loss of nearly $900 million U.S. in 2015, including a fourth-quarter loss that was higher than the entire 2014 loss ($320 million versus $294, respectively) to a gathering of investors.
Musk admitted that the Model X was perhaps “over-engineered” with the mounting problems (most of them revolving around the rear doors and seating) causing its delivery delays by nearly a year and a half (it was originally planned for the spring of 2014). Musk told journalists at the vehicle’s launch in late September 2015 that it’s a model that probably shouldn’t have been produced.
Still orders for the Model X are reportedly in the tens of thousands, with potential buyers overlooking the production delays for the chance to be one of the first to own the ground-breaking crossover Musk called the “best car ever made.”
He added that no company, including his own, will likely ever attempt to build a vehicle like the Model X.
