Toyota expands Lexus production in Cambridge

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. today announced plans to invest more than $100 million

It's good news for Cambridge, Ontario, as Toyota announces plans to invest $100 million and hire 400 new employees to increase Lexus RX production. A capacity increase of 30,000 to 104,000 units includes 15,000 RX450h's, the Lexus's hybrid iteration. The investment brings Toyota's annual production capacity in Canada to half a million units.

In March, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) announced an $80 million investment in its Woodstock, Ont., plant. Direct job creation in Canada this year year is now 800, for a 7,300-employee total.

The company says it is targeting early 2014 for the expanded Lexus production. "This is a big and ambitious project with new technology, exacting standards and tight timelines," said TMMC president Brian Krinock. "Our team members have demonstrated time and time again that they thrive on these kinds of challenges."

Minister of Industry Christian Paradis said, "Canada is a great is a great place to build vehicles and we will continue to encourage investment by providing tax relief, eliminating tariffs on machinery and equipment, and creating an environment that promotes innovation, research and development."

Toyota has been building vehicles in Canada for more than 25 years, including the Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4.
