2016 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle

Potential Toyota Mirai customers (those in California, anyway) can now stake their claim in automotive history by placing their orders online at www.toyota.com/mirai.

The Mirai electric vehicle combines hydrogen, stored onboard in a fuel cell, with oxygen to make electricity, while emitting nothing but water vapor. It has the best reported fuel economy, at the equivalent of 3.5 litres per 100 km, and the longest estimated driving range rating of any zero emission electric vehicle currently on the market, at over 500 km.

California residents can request to purchase a Mirai online and will then be contacted by Toyota to discuss ownership and be “qualified” for purchase. Selected buyers will then be appraised of the next steps toward obtaining delivery. The car is due to arrive in October 2015 with a price tag of $57,500 U.S.

Even more selective, Mirai Trailblazers will be offered further incentives such as zero percent financing over five years, $7,500 discount or $499 monthly payments over three years (with a $3,649 down payment).

All Mirai owners get an eight year/100,000 mile warranty (about 160,000 km) on key fuel cell components, three years complimentary fuel (capped at $15,000 total) and unlimited mileage roadside assistance, 24/7 customer call centre access for three years, no cost scheduled maintenance over 35,000 miles (just over 56,000 km), and trip interruption expenses of up to $500 per day for up to five days per incident (beyond a distance of 80 km from home),

Eight California dealers have been marked for distribution – four in the greater Los Angeles area and four in the bay area of northern California. The destination fee is $835.
