Volvo is looking to take luxury to a whole new level with the introduction of the S90 Ambience Concept at the Beijing Auto Show.
As the name indicates, the S90 Ambience is a concept based on the latest S90, specifically the S90 Excellence, focussing on the comfort and well-being of rear passengers in the 3-seat executive sedan, and redefining luxury with synchronized visuals, sounds and scents.
“The Ambience Concept redefines luxury by taking it beyond material choices, creating a car that connects with your senses,” said Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars. “The design explores how people feel inside the car and enables them to influence their own mood and well-being.”
S90 Ambience passengers can personalize their car’s atmosphere through the use of a smartphone app, allowing them to choose from seven visual themes synchronized with audio and scents. It begins with car’s headliner, with visuals such as Northern Lights, Scandinavian Forest, Swan Lake, Archipelago and Rain, as well as a Nocturnal theme for resting and a Freedom theme to provide energy.
Audio synchronized to each theme plays through the Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system, immersing passengers in the surround sound experience that includes small tweeters in the headrests. The themes are also linked up to one of four bespoke scents created by Byredo, the award-winning Swedish scent maker. The scents are deployed through a portal in the centre console.
“We’re known for our human-centric approach to design and as an industry leader in advanced safety technology,” said Page. “Ambience reinforces this and shows our broader focus on human care, which starts with safety and also extends to general well-being.”
Although shown in concept form, the S90 Ambience is destined to become an add-on to the S90 Excellence, likely starting in China, which is Volvo’s largest single market and the top marketplace for the S90.
“The Ambience Concept was created primarily for the China market and provides a contrast to China’s sometimes hectic city environments,” said Martin Andersson, senior commercial product manager at Volvo Cars’ Special Vehicles department. “The S90 Ambience Concept will reinforce our premium brand values in this important region.”
