Volkswagen this month released pics of its third-generation 2013 Beetle Convertible a month ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new ragtop gets a sportier silhouette in keeping with its coupe sibling. A flatter roofline and more upright windshield align the car's look more closely with the first generation, type 15 convertibles dating back to the early '50s.

Inside, the new generation retains the body-colour dashboard and boasts a fold-down rear split bench seat. Two rollover bars are concealed beneath the back seat and activated by the same computer that deploys the airbags in the event of a crash.

No Canadian details yet, but our American cousins will get a choice of three powerplants: a 2.5-litre five-cylinder with 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission; a 2.0-litere TDI clean diesel four-cylinder with 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque with a six-speed manual transmission; and a 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI four with 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft. of torque with either a six-speed manual or DSG automatic trasmission.

The vehicle launches in the fourth quarter of 2012, when pricing will be announced.
