Mercedes-Benz opened press day at the 2012 Moscow International Automobile Salon with the world premiere of its GL 63 AMG luxury off-roader.
The new high-performance SUV combines advanced technologies with an extensive range of standard equipment, accommodation for up to seven passengers and an AMG 5.5-litre bi-turbo V-8 engine, rated at 557 hp and an equally impressive 550 lb-ft of torque.
It can propel GL 63 AMG from 0-to-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).
To contribute to fuel efficiency, the GL 63 AMG employs alternator management and Mercedes' ECO start/stop system.
AMG's Ride Control sports suspension with Active Curve System roll-stabilization provides the high-level of driving dynamics and comfort one would expect from the Mercedes brand, the company says.
Power is transmitted to all four permanently-driven wheels by an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission.
Visually, the upright GL radiator grille with its central Mercedes star is adorned with high-gloss slats painted in black. Other AMG styling elements include a front apron with large openings that ensure effective air flow for the cooling modules.
The front apron merges into exclusive wheel-arch flaring that accommodates 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with 295 cross-section tires.
V8 BITURBO logos decorate the front fenders and aluminum running boards are illuminated.
In the rear, chrome-plated exposed twin tailpipes on the AMG sports exhaust system create both visual and acoustic highlights.
Inside, adjustable AMG sports seats feature double topstitching in a contrasting colour and include AMG badges on the front seat backrests and outer rear seat backrests. An AMG Performance 4-spoke steering wheel and an AMG instrument cluster are also part of the package.
"With the new GL 63 AMG, our all-wheel drive lineup is now complete," said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, who was in Moscow to celebrate the premiere.
The Russian market is said to be very important for Mercedes-Benz's performance brand, having contributed significantly to its 30% global sales growth for the first half of this year.
With its growth potential, it is also said to be a major element in the company's future strategy, called "AMG Performance 50", leading up to the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
On a per-capita basis, Canada is AMG's best market worldwide.
The market launch of the new Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG is scheduled for November 2012.
