SECRET COVE, BC – Hyundai has been “under-performing” in the hottest segment of the Canadian car market – compact CUV/SUVs – in part because of supply constrictions. An all-new 2016 Tucson, combined with revised plant allocations, is designed to rectify that situation.

The up-level 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine in the outgoing Tucson has been replaced by a new turbocharged 1.6-litre “Gamma” four that not only provides more power but goes 13% further on a unit of fuel. The turbo engine’s torque curve is perfectly flat from 1500 to 4500 rpm. It is paired with a new seven-speed dual clutch automatic developed in-house and paired with an all-wheel-drive system that includes active torque control to aid cornering. Hyundai figures 85% of all Tucsons sold in Canada will have AWD.

Loaded with features
Product planners said they went to great length to ensure the new Tucson was loaded with features that consumers will use every day, ones that do not appear only at the top of the grade walk. The list includes things like a heated steering wheel and rear seats, which are not offered on Tucsons destined for the U.S. but appreciated during Canadian winters. There are LED welcome lights on door handles and 95% of all new Tucsons will come with a blind spot detection system, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.
